If you know a fifth grader in the Brownsville area looking for a math challenge, “The Best of the Best” may be for you!
“The Best of the Best” is a fast-paced, problem-solving/computation competition where students race to see who can correctly answer as many as questions possible. Individual and team scores will be calculated and awards will be rewarded! So join us individually or gather your team of three from your school and join us for this fun competition.
In order to make the math meet more fun and exciting the top 5 math meet winners will play a modified “24 Game” under Round 24. Round 24 rules and sample questions can be found on the Rules & Practice page.

Attire is casual. We want our contestants to be comfortable but suggest dressing nicely as the winners will be presented awards on the stage and pictures will be taken.
Parent and Teacher Chaperons:
Student parents, guardians, and teachers can wait in the school cafeteria while the students are taking the written test or they may leave and come back to meet their students at the end of the test at 10:30 am.
Rules & Practice
Written Test Rules:
TIME: Students have 90 minutes to complete the test. You may leave the classroom after 60 minutes if you finish early.
SCORING: For each correct answer, you will receive 1, 2 or 3 points depending on the difficulty level of a question. At the beginning of each question, you can find the worth of the question written in parenthesis that indicates the difficulty level. For questions you omit, you will receive no points. There is no penalty for wrong answers. In the event of a tie, the number of 3 pointed right answers, and then the number of 2 pointed right answers will be checked.
MATERIALS: Students cannot use scratch paper to solve the questions. You may do scratch work in the test book. Use of calculators or cell phones is not allowed during the test.
Students will take an individual test focusing on various topics including; mathematical process, numerical representations-relationships, computations, algebra, geometry, probability, data analysis, mental math, and speed math. Though the test is challenging, we hope they will be fun for everyone. We have also included several easy questions on the tests so that new competitors can develop their confidence without getting discouraged.
Round 24 Rules:
STUDENTS PLAYERS – Top 5 students will be competing in an elimination Round 24 game. Every two students will be asked 3 “24” questions and the one has more points will stay on the table and continue round 24 until a winner is named.
STUDENTS’ HAND POSITION – Student fingertips should be placed near the buzzer but not on it.
MAKING A DECLARATION – Student declares by pushing the buzzer. Proctor/buzzer determines the first student to touch the buzzer. That student must announce the pattern (last step of the solution to make 24; i.e. “3 times 8” or “15 plus 9”) within 5 seconds of touching the buzzer, before given the opportunity to submit a written solution.
GIVING THE SOLUTION – The complete solution (all steps) must then be completed within 20 seconds. A student cannot change the pattern that he/she states within the first 5 seconds and must complete his/her solution using this same pattern. A student may correct himself and change the first and second steps of his solution until he “fixes” the solution by saying “equals, makes or is 24”.
PENALTY FLAGS – If a student cannot give the solution or gives an incorrect solution, he/she receives a penalty flag. Students who receive two penalties in a round are disqualified from further play during that round. When a student gets a penalty flag, the card is taken out of play and returned to the deck to be played again later.
FIVE WAYS TO DRAW A PENALTY FLAG: 1) Student does not announce a pattern within five seconds.
2) Student does not complete solution within 20 seconds.
3) Solution given is incorrect.
4) Student calls out the solution without touching the buzzer.
STUMPED CARDS – If all students at the table agree that they are stumped, or if no student makes an attempt to answer a card after 30 seconds, the proctor removes that card for later play.
How to Play the Round 24
Object of the game: Make the number 24 from the four numbers on a game card.
You can add, subtract, multiply and divide. Use all four numbers on the card, but use each number only once. You do not have to use all four operations. All number nines have a red center, so you can tell a nine from a six. Can you solve the card below?
4 x 3 = 12
12 x 2 = 24
24 ÷ 1 = 24
This is an easy card, called a “1 Dot,” because it has one white dot in the corner. Cards of medium difficulty have two red dots in the corner, and tough cards have three yellow dots.
